All Security Officers are required by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to hold a licence to work. Licences are issued following five day’s training, an examination and successful vetting. The licence is renewable every three years with no additional training unless there are amendments to the legislation. Therefore a Security Officer may receive no further training in security or related skills for many years.

As this is such a serious short fall in the training of Security Officers the Company created 4ST, an online training and performance portal for the manned guarding industry. It hosts nearly 50 training videos which are completed over a two year training programme and covers subjects for example in health & safety, data protection, law and arrest, evacuation procedures, equality and diversity, customer service. Security Officers are tested using online multiple choice questionnaires.

Each Officer’s performance is logged and reported to the contract management and the client. Security Officers’ duties are many and varied and the security aspect of their jobs may form only a small part of their everyday duties. Others duties often include customer service, facility management, tenant management, delivery coordination, post sorting, administration, car parks, cash handling, health & safety etc, and the online training portal has been designed to cover these topics.
